12/19/2023 0 Comments Deep cover movie![]() It can be a little stilted and even goofy at times with its dialogue (we'll have Barbecued Jumbo Shrimp!), and I can see the ending being divisive to some (though I love the ambiguity), but the character writing and work from Fishburne, Goldblum, and even smaller cast members such as Roger Guenveur Smith, Victoria Dillard, Kamala Lopez, Gregory Sierra, and Charles Martin Smith isn't to be forgotten. In a way, it reminds me of a poor man's Sicario with the stance it takes on The War on Drugs. Written by The Player screenwriter Michael Tolkin, the screenplay touches on or makes direct allusions to race, privilege, masculinity, fatherhood, and religion. On what appears to be an 8-million budget, director Bill Duke still manages to bring a style and intensity to quite a few scenes. Johnny Depp might have played Donnie Brasco in the Academy Award-nominated film, but the real-life. I know some people hate film noir but I believe this movie was made for it, as it's somewhat poetic with its Fishburne-led voiceover and certainly introspective. Listen to Deep Cover: The Real Donnie Brasco on Spotify. One line a character says at the end of the end of the movie hits at there not being a thing such as black and white, but only rich and poor. This ugly side of the war on drugs explores the context of race, identity and hypocrisy within a brutal and alienating investigation. ![]() It's a compelling and deeply layered morality tale. A black uniformed policeman is recruited by a devious drug enforcement agent to infiltrate a smuggling organization seeking to expand into designer drugs. He shares a lot of scenes and strong chemistry with Jeff Goldblum, electric and even a bit scary as his lawyer character evolves in the film. Convoluted and mostly unconvincing as a portrait of the drug underworld, Deep Cover based on a story by Michael Tolkin still carries some resonance due to its. He eventually makes a name for himself and becomes a major. (Fishburne) is a cop recruited by the DEA to go deep undercover in the Los Angeles drug trade and enable the prosecution of key members of the Gallegos Cartel. Laurence (then known as Larry) Fishburne is amazing in his first real lead role, a straight-edge officer from Cleveland asked to go undercover in Los Angeles and fight the flow of cocaine. Deep Cover is a 1992 crime film directed by Bill Duke and starring Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum. I actually believe it's one of the forgotten/underrated/underwatched movies of the 90's as it pertains to the urban crime-drama genre, and I might even prefer it to Boyz in the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City, and the like. I've rewatched it since multiple times and I love it more and more. Gave it a watch then and I was transfixed with the story it told. I was made aware of this movie by my father back in 2010 (I was two when this movie came out). ![]()
